Your website’s success is precarious. You cannot set it up once and expect it to perform well and appeal to users for the rest of its lifespan. You need to update its look, content, and even structure regularly to offer an aesthetically pleasing and easy-to-use product for your users. If there is any delay or complication, you could lose a sale, or perhaps a signup. There are so many ways that the quality of your site could be holding your entire business back, and that’s not even the only thing you need to worry about!

The first place to look is on your website itself. You will want to use tools like Google Analytics to determine exactly where the key problem areas are. If you have a high bounce rate (meaning a large percentage of visitors click on your page once and then leave), then you know you need to boost your aesthetic and make it more enticing to engage with. If, on the other hand, activity is solid right up until checkout, then you know there is an issue somewhere with making payments. You need to optimise your site for both these users, and for search algorithms alike because both are needed to keep your website healthy and active.

1. Your Website Does Not Perform Well

If your website is not fast, secure, or easy to use, you are making several mistakes that will cost you. Not only can they detract from the user’s experience, but Google and other search engines will also penalise you for them. That is why you need to go through and audit your site regularly to ensure quality at every turn. If you haven’t done this in a while, start first by clearing up your pages. You should not have any old or outdated pages left. Clear up your site and make it easy to use, ensure there are no broken links and have your friends and family go through it. If there are any hiccups in the structure, you must fix it. User friendliness is a key component to your success.  

An old website can kill your success and destroy your reputation. Always be willing to revamp it and to change how it looks to keep up with modern trends. Search algorithms don’t like old websites, and users don’t like old websites. Old means outdated and unsecure, so update and revamp your site immediately if it does not match the quality of popular modern sites.

2. You Are Not Monitoring Activity On Your Site

Just because you have gone through and audited your site’s performance, however, does not mean you have caught every problem. You need to monitor your site’s performance at every turn and keep track of how users are engaging with your site. You want them to stay on your web pages for as long as possible. The longer they stay, the more they are engaging with your site. If a user spends very little time on a page they should spend a good deal of time on, for example, then try to figure out how you can improve your site to get the engagement you want. If you don’t, your website will not meet the goals you want it to.

3. You Do Not Update It Regularly

Google and users alike need to have new content in order to keep coming back. It is for this reason that you will see even big e-commerce stores with a blog. By having a variety of different content updated regularly, you can show both users and Google that your site is valuable and active. When there are nearly 2 billion websites out there in the world, and only about 172 million of those are active, this is a critical characteristic that you cannot bear to ignore. By creating new and engaging content regularly, and even by updating your fixed content like homepage and about information, you can keep your site alive and thriving.

4. You Have Never Audited It

Auditing is important for so many reasons. Outside of function and performance, it is necessary to clear your site of any old and outdated SEO tactics that could be holding you back. Keyword stuffing, duplicated content, and other black hat SEO techniques could be holding you back without you even realising it.

5. You Have Not Optimised it for Search Engines

Every time you create new content, that content needs to be optimised for today’s current SEO environment. Doing so will boost the visibility of the content you produce and that of your site itself. A great example of this includes adding internal links to previous posts you have created.

4 Off-Site Mistakes You Are Making Right Now

The internet works by accessing shared servers that are located around the world. As such, the very nature of the internet and websites itself is that of a community. It makes sense, then, that the actions that occur off your website can also affect its overall performance. There are a variety of ways your off-site presence could be affecting and hurting your website’s success, which is why you need to stop making these four off-site mistakes now.

1. You Have Not Audited Your Back Link Profile

There are so many reasons why your website might be suffering from a poor backlink profile. You might have adopted an expired domain name that once belonged to a spam account that has ruined your ranking before you even started. Or perhaps you once invested in a backlink campaign before Google’s Penguin update. This isn’t a bad thing, but it means you are going to have to go through and clean up your backlink profile before you can see any progress in your site’s ranking on the SERPs.

To do this, you will need to use a link analysis tool to find and discover where backlinks to your sites are located. This tool should also have the ability to tell you the page rank, domain authority, and trust flow. If the site is of poor quality, you will then need to contact Its webmaster and request to have your link removed. If the webmaster no longer exists or does not respond, then you will need to go to Google to have the link disavowed.

2. You Do Not Know Where Your Brand is Mentioned

On the other hand, there could be plenty of link building opportunities out there already. In this instance, you will want to search the internet not for backlinks, but for brand mentions. Then, if the author of the post that mentions your brand is trustworthy and well regarded, you can contact them to ask that they add your link to their post.

3. You Have Not Committed to a Link Building Scheme

Asking webmasters to add your link to existing content is the start of a white-hat link building campaign that you need to commit to if you want to get your website to the top of Google. Link building needs to be undertaken with quality in mind. Find and choose quality websites within your niche to partner with. Then, you will want to create bespoke and quality content containing your link to add as a guest post. Done well enough, and your ranking will boost significantly on your chosen keywords. As the process is difficult, however, it is wise that you use expert link building services instead of trying this by yourself.

4. You Have Not Increased Your Local Citations  

Local SEO is one of the easiest ways to rank well, boost your online visibility, and also increase local traffic. Local citations are listings within local directories. The more verified locations you have, the more Google can trust your location and the more likely you will be able to reach the top spot on local searches. Being the only specialist in town isn’t enough. You need to ensure that search engines know so that when users are searching for you, they can find you. To start boosting your local SEO, add as many local citations as you can. The more reputable the directory, the better. Google Business is a great directory to start with, as is Facebook. If there is already a listing for your business, claim it. This will often just involve a phone call to your business to verify you do, indeed, own it.  

When your website is your business or your passion, you need to ensure that everything is working in its favour. This takes a lot of time and effort, yes, but the results are substantial. You want users to engage with your site and engage with it often. You want search engines to rank you favourably. You want to spread your brand awareness and build your brand authority. All of these goals are intertwined, and can all be achieved by fixing these nine mistakes and committing to the quality and health of your website in the future.
