Breadcrumbs

NavigationSEOSERP FeatureUser Experience

Website breadcrumbs help show any webpage’s position in the hierarchy of the website it’s on. On a SERP, the breadcrumbs are visible in the text directly beneath the webpage’s title. It’s often displayed in green as a URL with a small down-facing arrow to the right of the URL.

These breadcrumbs are regarded as useful for two reasons. They can give web users information about the website hosting the webpage that they are considering clicking upon. But they can also be a useful navigational tool in their own right, helping web users access webpages one level higher on the website’s hierarchy.

A simple example of a hierarchy on a website is as follows: Home Page > News > News 2022 > Page Being Viewed. The news page being viewed is nested within a page containing news from 2022, which is nested within the news page of the entire website, accessed through the Home Page.

To have a website’s hierarchy accurately listed by Google, it helps to have user-friendly page names so that it’s easy for web users to understand which pages are stacked within one another.
