A meta tag is a structured data element that appears in the head section of a webpage. All meta tags are standardised in order to be easily read by browsers. The purpose of meta tags is to define specific attributes that are present on a webpage.  

Meta tags that are used most often on webpages include the title and description tags, which are used to determine the text shown on search engine listings. Without these tags, Google will be unable to index and present webpages on its search engine results pages. 

An example of a title meta tag is: <title>PAGE TITLE</title><meta name=“DESCRIPTION” content=“DESCRIPTION TEXT”
