While many might have been excited about the warm weather in the lead-up to the bank holiday, SEO consultants, agencies, content creators, and digital marketing executives alike were left curious to see how the news of the latest Google May 2026 core update would affect their own/their clients’ websites.

If this is the first time you are hearing about this new update, we’ve got you covered with everything you need to know.

Google May 2026 Update Details

On Thursday, 21st May, at 08.40 (11.40 AM ET), Google announced and began rolling out the most recent update to its core algorithm.

Google said on LinkedIn, “Today we released the May 2026 core update to Google Search. This is a regular update designed to better surface relevant, satisfying content for searchers from all types of sites. The rollout may take up to 2 weeks to complete.”

Let’s break down their announcement to see what this exactly means for you:

  • Regular Update

Since it’s a regular update to their core systems, this isn’t targeting a specific issue or industry. This is a totally normal process, something they regularly do each year, and experts, including us, expect them. With it being a core update, too, you can sigh in relief that it isn’t a penalty action update. Core updates are never penalties; instead, they are designed to continue promoting and rewarding the best websites. In this case, they are looking at how it evaluates content and whether they can better reward it.

  • Language Choices

The critical element of this statement is the use of the word “surface” within “This is a regular update designed to better surface relevant, satisfying content”. By using this language, Google is telling us it won’t be changing what good content looks like. Rather, it is about finding and utilising better solutions to identify and rank content that deserves greater visibility. Google wants us to know that it is just refining its ability to judge better.

It was no surprise to see they want relevant content to reap its just rewards, but the term “satisfying content for searchers” was interesting. This suggests that Google is continuing to promote the helpful, people-first content, reminding experts, web admins, and content creators to create for users, not for them. You can bet that the results on that first page will have content that fully answers the question, demonstrates expertise, gives a good user experience, and ultimately leaves the search satisfied.

  • Reminders

The final few words of that statement are a gentle reminder that Google doesn’t favour anyone. Small startup, big eCommerce store, forum, publisher, whatever you are, so long as your content is relevant, satisfying, and written for the user, this core update will only stand to benefit you.

Recommendations for Handling a Google Core Update

As Google noted in its announcement, the entire update will take about 2 weeks to finish rolling out. However, you don’t need to panic at this short time frame; this is one of the biggest mistakes business owners and web admins make. Instead of panicking and making any changes immediately, we suggest you do the following:

  • Hold Fire

It may seem counterintuitive not to do anything during a core update. However, over these 2 weeks, rankings can fluctuate quite significantly. There’s no point in changing anything right now. This includes anything relevant to the core update itself, e.g., your content. So, even if you see a traffic drop in Google Search Console, remind yourself that traffic will fluctuate, and you won’t be the only site to be experiencing this. It will be the same situation across the board for websites of all standings. Patience is key to avoiding jumping to conclusions. Google is rethinking and relearning about your site (and countless others), so the issues you experience might be because of this. Once it has finished and regained stability, you might find that you have remained where you originally were, or, better yet, moved up. If you’ve dropped down or were hoping to move up, don’t dismay; there is action you can take.

Our message also extends to other major structural changes. If you are currently working on technical implementations, such as internal linklink building overhauls or URL structure changes, wait until the Google core update has finished before continuing. If you were to make any changes, it could slow down Google’s understanding of your site.

  • Focus on E-E-A-T

Once the update has finished and you have a clearer picture of the outcome, you can start implementing changes. Top of your list should be E-E-A-T (experience, expertise, authority, and trust). This has been growing in importance for years, but the latest update is a great way to reiterate it. Google will reward those with content that demonstrates E-E-A-T practices. With the rise of AI tools that enable business owners to create content rather than rely on their own experts for information, expertise, and experience, too many businesses are relying on these tools to handle their content. While they can be useful tools, they cannot provide real-world knowledge, practical insights, or genuine experiences that will aid others. This is the type of content that hits each element of E-E-A-T, provides relevant, satisfying answers, and, with this update, could see you justly rewarded. So focus on creating E-E-A-T-standard content to help you benefit from this latest update.

Summary of Google May 2026 Core Update

Expected Finished Roll Out Date: 4th June – it will take around 2 weeks.

Update Type: Broad Core Algorithm Update.

Specific Target: All types of content.

Purpose: To uncover and deliver more relevant, useful content to users.

Affected Areas: Search rankings for all websites in all industries.

Who May See Impacts? Any website, publisher, eCommerce site, or blog relying on organic traffic may see traffic changes, either positively or negatively, depending on the quality of its content.

What to Do Next: Hold fire until the update has finished, then focus on improving content with strong E-E-A-T practices.

Update: Barry Schwartz from Search Engine Roundtable flagged that the Core Update hit very hard Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st May.

“Again, this weekend, specifically Saturday, May 30th, was super volatile – which makes me think this was the tail-end spike we often see before Google announces that the update is done.”

Stay tuned for our upcoming blog post delving into the outcome of the update.
