Don’t sit back and hope for the best after optimizing your site for search engines. Confirm your hard work and effort are paying off by keeping a close eye on various SEO metrics, such as your organic traffic and conversion rate.

Google Search Console and Google Analytics simplify tracking SEO results, which can help you identify if your current tactics are working or require more attention. Even if they are working, you must monitor them regularly to improve and protect your rankings.

Here are the best ways to track SEO results for a successful campaign.

Monitor Organic Web Traffic

Unlike Pay-Per-Click (PPC) campaigns, organic traffic is free and occurs when a user clicks on your website in a search engine, such as Google or Bing. You’ll have naturally earned the visits by optimizing your site to improve its ranking in the search engine results pages (SERPs).

If the number of organic visitors is growing month after month, it is a sign your SEO strategy is moving in the right direction. However, you might need to return to the drawing board if your organic traffic is tumbling or stagnating.

Google’s Search Console is the best way to monitor SEO results, as it will provide a comprehensive view of your site’s organic traffic.

For instance, you can start tracking results by reviewing your site’s:

  • Total number of clicks
  • Organic traffic improvements
  • Total impressions

We recommend applying a filter to remove your brand name. It will provide detailed information on organic clicks based on your SEO efforts and exclude traffic from various marketing channels, such as social media.

Keep Track of Your Keyword Rankings

Grow your organic traffic by attempting to earn the top spot for popular keywords. Focus on incorporating keywords with a high search volume and a low keyword difficulty to improve your chances of success in the SERPs.

Of course, you must follow the golden rule of using the keyword most relevant to your brand and its products or services. It will help Google rank your business and generate more organic visitors looking for your goods or services.

However, you can’t expect to add the keyword to your content and boost your organic traffic overnight. Instead, you must routinely monitor your position rankings using a rank tracker.

Know Your Click-Through Rate

Click-through rate (CTR) is a metric used to measure the ratio of people who have clicked on your link compared to the number of users who saw it. For example, if a web page appeared in a search engine 100 times, but only 4 people clicked on it, it would have a CTR of 4%. A 3% CTR is good, and anything above this number is great.

Monitoring your CTR is a great way to check if you have successful search results, as it will indicate how many people clicked on your page in the SERPs and if your title tags and meta descriptions are working.

Encourage people to click on your site by creating compelling, relevant title tags and meta descriptions that excite their interest.

For instance, you could generate more organic traffic by incorporating your primary target keyword into a title tag, the HTML tag code assigned to a web page. It’s the blue hyperlink that appears in the SERPs and encourages users to click on a web page.

A meta description is the content under the page title in the SERPs. It should be approximately 160 characters long, accurately summarize the web page, and feature a target keyword and a call-to-action.

Average Session Duration

Average session duration, also known as dwell time, is the average time people spend on your webpage before closing a browser or returning to the SERPs. It is great for SEO tracking, as it can help you learn more about search intent and how to enhance the user experience.

For instance, a visitor may have found your blog post in a search engine and remained on the page for 9 minutes before clicking on a call-to-action for a product page. The same visitor may then spend 3 minutes on the page before placing an order.

If the above happens, it indicates they had a 12-minute session duration, and the dwell time suggests they enjoyed the blog post, which is why they chose to visit a product page and buy from your brand.

Of course, the above is the best-case scenario when a user visits your website. The average session duration will combine all user sessions, creating an average number to help you learn about the user experience.

If the dwell time is significantly less than the time it takes to read a piece of content, such as a long-form blog post, it’s a sign you need to address one or more issues.

For instance, you might need to improve:

  • The page speed
  • The search intent of a keyword
  • Your links (e.g., a link might be broken)
  • The content’s quality or value

Continually review the average session duration after making the necessary changes to generate better SEO results. Bear in mind that some web pages are likely to have shorter dwell times than others.

Are you unsure where to monitor the average session duration? Click Audience in the left-hand menu of Google Analytics, then click Overview to track SEO results like a pro.

Start Tracking Your Backlink Profile

If you’re wondering what’s one of the best ways to monitor my SEO strategy, track the sites linking back to your website, which is known as a backlink profile. Every SEO specialist will tell you that a healthy backlink profile is a top ranking factor you mustn’t ignore.

If you’re struggling to reach the top 5 results in the SERPs for target keywords, make it your mission to strengthen your backlink profile by acquiring high-quality, high-authority backlinks from credible sites.

Once you have acquired a credible backlink on a trustworthy site, you’ll need to wait for Google to index it before it will improve your rankings. Use a backlink checker to review your current backlink profile, as it will support SEO tracking and help you identify if any backlinks are affecting a strategy.
