On June 24, 2026, Google announced that it had started rolling out its latest spam update. The search engine giant said it would take a few days to complete. As always whenever Google releases an update, digital marketing teams everywhere waited to see what impact it would have on their content, rankings, and organic and AI search visibility. The Google June 2026 spam update was a normal spam update, the second of its kind this year, designed to improve how the search engine’s systems detect spam to make sure it’s always giving users the best quality results and responses.

Just 2 days later on June 26, Google confirmed that the spam update was complete. So, what does it all mean for search visibility? Our experts explain everything you need to know right here.

What Is The June 2026 Spam Update?

The June 2026 Google spam update was the second spam update this year and took 2 days to roll out fully. The update was a standard spam update, targeting websites that violate Google search spam policies. Its spam policies haven’t changed, so still use them as the framework for recovering from any impact. It doesn’t target link spam or any adherence to any other policies.

Ultimately, the update seeks to improve search spam detection on a large scale, targeting untoward SEO practices that are used to trick the search engine into ranking low-quality content highly. The crackdown is part of Google’s commitment to ensure that search users only see the best, most helpful content on the internet.

Spam updates are different from core updates, which are broad changes to Google’s ranking systems. Instead, its spam updates are improvements to its automated systems, including SpamBrain, which identify spam. This, in turn, improves the search engine’s responsiveness and accuracy in detecting spammy practices.

Any Google update can disrupt rankings and visibility, with the worst-affected sites facing penalties. However, for websites that follow best practices and concentrate on having high-quality, helpful, user-first content that adheres to Google’s E-E-A-T (experience, expertise, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness), they should not experience any negative effects from the update.

Why Is The Spam Update Important?

As we’ve already touched on, the spam update is important because it reinforces Google’s ongoing commitment to providing users with the best experience. That means getting rid of spammy content that provides little to no value.

What Areas Are Impacted?

Spam updates strengthen how Google detects spam. They do this by targeting these key areas:

  • Cloaking practices that show users and search engines different content with the sole aim of manipulating the SERPs (search engine results pages).
  • Spammy content that has been mass-produced by AI that doesn’t contain any accurate or useful information. This content has the sole aim of tricking the SERPs into higher rankings.
  • Keyword stuffing, the practice of manipulating rankings by filling content with keywords in an unnatural way or out of context.
  • Expired domain abuse, where old domains with high authority are repurposed for low-quality content.
  • Affiliate pages that don’t have any content that’s of value to the user.

What Happens If You’ve Been Hit?

As the update has only just finished rolling out, its full impact is not yet known. However, Google’s guidance says that sites that have seen changes following a spam update should review its spam policies that we linked earlier. If you make improvements following this, though, don’t expect an instant boost. Improvements can take months for Google to reassess, so a quick recovery won’t happen.

What You Should Focus On To Survive Future Spam Updates

Google’s commitment to making sure content fulfils search intent and is genuinely helpful is going nowhere. Content that’s created solely for ranking without providing any real value is likely to be flagged as spam.

So, what should you focus on to recover from this update if you’ve been hit, or to protect or improve your visibility in future updates?

We’ve put together this list:

  • Is Your Content Original?

The content on your website should be unique and fresh. It needs to offer something new rather than just reworking existing content that’s already available on the web.

  • Does Your Content Show Off Your Expertise?

Google loves it when website content demonstrates real-world knowledge and experience. It’s a major trust signal, and you should aim to capture it in your content. This is something that AI-generated content struggles to do.

  • Is It Helpful?

If your content only focuses on hitting keywords, it won’t be all that helpful to users. Content needs to be concise and actually answer user questions. Remember the helpful content update?

  • Is E-E-A-T a focus?

Making sure your content fulfils Google’s E-E-A-T criteria will help you survive a spam update. Strong content that hits the 4 points is more likely to rank and be featured in AI results.

  • Does It Fulfil Search Intent?

Content needs to be written in an answer-first style that clearly aligns with search intent. Use keywords carefully and where it makes sense to do so in relation to intent. When your content clearly answers what users want to know, search engines will trust you more.

  • Are You Using Content Clusters?

Content connected by similar themes helps reinforce your credibility and authority with Google. This means the search engine is more likely to view your content as trustworthy, improving your visibility for related searches in the long run.

  • Are Your Backlinks From Reputable Sources?

Continuing to have a diverse and quality backlink profile can help strengthen your online presence. Your links need to come from industry-relevant sites to have the biggest impact on your authority and trust. Digital PR link building and brand mentions are particularly important.

When it comes to recovering from a spam update or just future-proofing your strategy, it’s always best to start with an audit to pinpoint any outdated, thin, or low-quality content. This is also the perfect opportunity to ensure that your content aligns with user intent and is helpful. It’s also crucial to revisit Google’s spam policies to make sure you aren’t falling foul of any suspicious practices.
